2024 National Youth Science Camp
NM Delegates Selected
New Mexico Academy of Science is pleased to announce the two delegates that have been selected to represent NM at the 2024 National Youth Science Camp to be held from June 29 through July 20, 2024.
Our 2024 delegates are Tymerah Raedawn Chischilly, a Senior at Thoreau High School, and Leela Young, a Senior at Albuquerque Academy. Delegates are selected through a competitive application process that is open to high school juniors and seniors.
Two students from each state, Washington D.C., and select countries are invited to attend the all-expenses-paid program. Congratulations to Raedawn and Leela on your impressive academic records and selection to attend camp.
What is National Youth Science Camp?
Established in 1963 in West Virginia, the National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp) is a free residential honors program for two accomplished high school students from each state in the USA, plus Washington, DC, and select international countries.
This residential science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) program is designed to honor and challenge some of the nation’s rising STEAM leaders and provide them with opportunities to engage with STEAM professionals and participate in exciting outdoor activities.
NYSCamp is an in-person residential camp. Selected delegates attend camp for FREE but must commit to attending the entire camp! This experience will include world-class lectures, directed studies, and seminars with prestigious and up-and-coming STEAM professionals who are making a difference in their fields of study and changing the world for good. The camp will also provide significant opportunities for delegates to interact and engage with STEAM professionals, camp staph (intentional misspelling to highlight their infectious enthusiasm), and other delegates in exciting, fun, and meaningful ways.
The NYSCamp is hosted by the National Youth Science Academy, formerly known as the National Youth Science Foundation. The NYSCamp is offered to selected participants at no cost so that talented students may attend regardless of their financial ability.
How are Delegates Chosen?
Students apply at http://apply.nyscamp.org/. The New Mexico Academy of Science (NMAS) selects two delegates and alternates for the camp based upon an applicant’s academic achievement, leadership in school and community activities, and genuine interest in the sciences. Selected delegates are contacted by NYSCamp Staff to coordinate logistics of their participation including arranging travel to the camp location. The NMAS state selection coordinator is Margaret Showalter.
