2024 New Mexico Research Symposium: A Great Success!

The annual NM Research Symposium has become a much-anticipated forum for students, teachers, and others to come together to hear about research in NM. NMAS has traditionally been honored to help NM NSF EPSCoR in their fantastic organization and running of NMRS but for NMRS 2024 we took the lead when they were temporarily unable to do so – with congratulations to NM EPSCoR for their successful renewal of funding they will once again take the lead for NMRS 2025.

NMRS 2024 was also special because the NM Science Teachers Association kindly allowed us to hold NMRS jointly with their 2024 Fall Conference. This allowed us to bring together two of the important constituencies NMAS seeks to serve – students and teachers!

The joint meeting was very well attended with 112 participants registering for NMRS and over 250 for NMSTA.

Research Symposium

NMRS was once again proud to provide the opportunity for students from across NM to have a forum to present their research, through oral presentations (19) and poster presentations (42), and we awarded prizes for the top 3 both undergraduate and graduate student poster presentations – many thanks to our volunteer poster judges!

We also provided 25 student travel grants to help enable attendance of students traveling from across NM – thanks to Universities Research Association and the American Chemical Society Central NM Local Section for financial support.

Keynote Address

NMRS attendees were welcomed by 2024 NMAS President Diane Peebles and were treated to a wonderful and engaging Keynote Address “Breaking Heisenberg – Controlling the Quantum World for Tomorrow’s Technology” presented by UNM’s Professor Ivan Deutsch.

Outstanding STEM Educators

Finally, a tremendous highlight of the NMRS meetings has been presentation of annual awards to two Outstanding Science Teachers supported by NMAS and the American Chemical Society Central NM Local Section.

The 2024 winners were Romalyn Ubaldo, Science and Math Teacher, 9th-12th grades, Santa Rosa HS. Santa Rosa NM and Inez Jacobs, Science STEM Instructional Coach for 9th-12th grades, Mark Armijo Academy, ABQ Charter STEM High School.

Congratulations and thanks to Romalyn and Inez as well as to all the inspiring science teachers across NM making such a positive impact on their students and to the benefit of our communities.

We look forward to welcoming you to NMRS 2025 in the fall – please join us!
